SIESTA KEY — For its next reality show, MTV will turn its cameras to Siesta Key.
A commercial for a new show called “Siesta Key” ran Sunday during the MTV Movie & TV Awards. The TV spot proclaims “From The Hills to the Beach, Welcome to Siesta Key.”
According to an Adweek profile of MTV president Chris McCarthy, the show premieres July 19 and is a reality offering similar to “The Hills” about “a group of kids in an elite Florida enclave who return home for the summer after spending their freshman year in college.”
The show has been shooting locally and will be here a few more weeks, said Jeanne Corcoran, director of the Sarasota County Film and Entertainment Office. She said the show filmed its pilot about a year and a half ago and once it was picked up, came back to Southwest Florida to shoot more.
Specifics about the show remain under wraps.
“I can say it is an unscripted reality show with energetic young adults enjoying the Siesta Key lifestyle and culture, and we have been advised it will be rated no more than PG-13 or its television equivalent,” Corcoran said in an email.
Mike Granthon — who owns multiple Siesta Key establishments including The Beach Club, which draws large, college-age crowds for its nightclub events — said he’s excited about the show.
Though some residents already have voiced their criticism about “Siesta Key” online, Granthon noted that other reality shows, such as “Breaking Amish,” have filmed locally. What he’s seen of the show seems to be positive, Granthon said.
“I think these are local kids with good families that live here and they wouldn’t want to do anything to make us look bad,” he said.
“Siesta Key” won’t be the only television show airing this summer with local connections. TNT’s “Claws” takes place in Manatee County and filmed some in Sarasota, though it was shot primarily in New Orleans. It premieres June 11.
